Medway Council supported the proposal which will see 175 flats, commercial units, and a public space constructed at Chatham Waterfront in Globe Lane, alongside the redevelopment of a rundown car park at Britton Farm in Gillingham for further residential units.

The scheme, brought forward by the authority's Medway Development Company, is part of the wider plans to regenerate the town's economic prospects by improving the public realm.

The public space will include a central plaza, play area and waterfront podium with the hope that food and drink businesses will move into the commercial units and encourage more people to use this area.

The project meets the authority's 25% affordable homes policy, although they will all be based at a new five-storey block at Britton Farm.

Dave Harris, Head of Planning at Medway Council said "The scheme is very well designed and is based on a thorough understanding of the River Medway and Chatham. It also looks to bring some residential units back into our town centres to create that vitality and improve viability."

  • Part of town regeneration project
  • Improving public realm and pedestrian permeability
  • Addressing resident and town centre user parking needs
