Last week our in-house graduate scheme wrapped up another session, with this month's modules including Access Feasibility Design & Layout Review, an Introduction to Transport and Undertaking Effective Site Visits. We asked some of our Graduate Planners how they're finding the programme so far:
"At DHA we (the graduates) hit the ground running, learning day-by-day, in a fast-paced and hands-on environment. Therefore, one of the most enticing aspects of the graduate training days is the opportunity to slow down and consolidate the principles of planning which are utilised in our everyday activities.
"The training sessions introduce us to the role of the six specialist consulting teams which underpin the wider business, providing us with the necessary skills to integrate fully within the larger team, and so that we can provide a comprehensive integrated service to a wide client base.
"Aside from an opportunity to combine the theory with the practical, these sessions enable us to ask questions, in an interactive seminar environment whereby no question is deemed ‘too silly' and will always be answered. Group tasks and activities provide an opportunity to revisit the basics and ensure that we can confidently apply concepts we encounter in our general working lives, as well as share ideas in a collaborative environment.
"So far this year we have covered a multitude of modules including ‘Core Planning Principles and Procedures', and ‘Plan Making Processes and Policies'. In 'An Introduction to Transport Planning', we considered access feasibility design and layout reviews. Other important topics have included ‘How to undertake an effective site visit', whereby we discussed various health and safety considerations and the importance of site visits themselves. Although these may seem like basic knowledge, they also include practical elements which prepare us to implement what we have learned."
