I joined DHA as my first job having just turned 18 a month beforehand. At secondary school I found universities were advertised as the best route to take after completing A levels, however my family highlighted the benefits of completing an apprenticeship instead.
At first, being in an office environment was a big adjustment from being at school, although I settled in quickly due to the friendly nature of the people around me. I was encouraged to ask questions and was provided with the support I needed to fit into my new role.
From the start of my career at DHA I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects from residential to commercial and education sectors, on developments of all types and scales. I have always felt that although I hadn’t been to university, I was never treated differently as an apprentice to the other graduates and was provided with the same opportunities to progress.
DHA have sponsored me through higher education courses on a part time basis, allowing me to achieve both a HNC and HND.
Since obtaining my diploma I have been promoted to my current position as a Senior Transport Engineer and I now primarily work on stage 1 access design, detailed layout reviews for planning applications and flood risk assessments. I also now work with and mentor our current apprentice, Matthew.
Although studying part time and having to complete coursework in my evenings and weekends can be tiring, overall working in conjunction with my course has helped me put the theory in to practice and DHA have provided support such as study leave to help with the workload.
Another benefit of completing an apprenticeship is that I already have a secure job within my chosen field. When hearing from school friends who have recently graduated, it can sometimes be difficult to get into the job that you were hoping for due to limited positions available, whereas I’m grateful that I don’t have to worry about this.
Studying whilst working in an office full of experts who can share their knowledge and experience has been invaluable and is something that may have not been provided at university. It’s also given me a huge boost in confidence; speaking to people on a daily basis, liaising with clients and having a very friendly office full of welcoming people has really helped me to come out of my shell and grow my communication skills.
DHA has not only provided me with the support I need to begin my career and become a knowledgeable professional with ample opportunities for progression, but it has also welcomed me into a great sociable environment where team social activities are actively encouraged, improving the bond between colleagues and making the company a very enjoyable place to work.
I definitely feel that my years of experience have been invaluable and my decision to complete an apprenticeship rather than a university degree was the correct decision for me, showing that you do not need to take the University route to join a professional industry.
