Acting for Reds10 on behalf of the Department for Education, DHA presented the planning case for the new Oak Tree School, located in Winnersh, between Wokingham and Reading. It will be managed by Maiden Erlegh Trust, which operates schools across Berkshire.

Permission has been secured for the erection of a contemporarily designed new Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) school, designed to achieve carbon neutral status, and meet the local shortage of places for SEN pupils.

Operating over two-storeys, the school building with specialist classrooms and ancillary facilities will also include dining areas, sensory rooms, and a multiuse hall. The external surfaced sports play area will include a multiuse games area and the school will maintain its connectivity to the existing nearby allotments.

The Oak Tree SEND school, designed with a fabric first approach, utilises sustainable materials. Its heating, cooling, and hot water will be provided using highly efficient air source heat pumps with efficiency levels typically in excess of 350%.

It is being developed in parallel with a new Wokingham Borough Council residential scheme on the adjacent site for circa 100 new homes, with the school hall to be available for community use and hire outside of school hours.
