The 12-storey building had been assessed as no longer being viable as an office with proposals to bring forward a minimum of 160 apartments in the heart of the town centre.

Given its size and relatively good condition, and with demolition not viable, the design-led proposals involved the transformation of Mountbatten House from its current brutalist exterior. The proposals include a new extension to the existing building including a rooftop function space, an architectural wrap to the old bus station frame, and new public realm.

The proposals are an integrated response to other developments taking place nearby, including Riverside residential, Whiffen's Avenue residential, new community facilities in the Pentagon Centre and the prospect of the redevelopment of the High Street, The Paddock and The Brook.

DHA, which led on the planning and transport issues of the project, worked alongside architects Lyall Bills & Young with C F Møller Architects, assisted by MLM engineers, BDP (structures), and Heritage Collective.
