Working with Ashford Borough Council and ZED PODS, the zerocarbon modular house builder, DHA has secured permission for 23 new homes to be used as temporary accommodation for homeless people or individuals and families needing respite prior to finding more permanent accommodation.
When built, the new homes split between two blocks will provide much needed temporary accommodation for the borough, supplementing two other similar accommodations provided by Ashford Borough Council, and reducing the Council's reliance on B&Bs and hostels, to address demand. This will provide significant cost savings to the Council and help to reduce homelessness in Ashford.
The site is a short distance from Ashford town centre, providing residents with access to shops, cafés and other amenities within a 10-minute walking radius, and less than 1km from Ashford International Station. It is located within the Henwood Industrial Estate and bounded to the south-west and north-west by Ashford Fire Station, with further commercial development to the north-east.
The units will be positioned on a 2.4m-high platform placing their fi nished floor level far above the most extreme 100-year flooding event. Each dwelling will be a self-contained unit providing a living dining room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom spaces. The rooftops are lined with a dark seamed metal with 126 integrated photovoltaic panels, among other sustainability measure to ensure that the development is a zero-carbon development. The space below the apartments will be used to house an office with two permanent workers on site to support residents.
