Early engagement delivers positive apartments decision
The value of early engagement with planners has been shown after DHA secured permission for the owner of Pennings and Juniper Cottage at Saltwood, near Hythe, to replace the homes with seven apartments.
As part of the site analysis, ON Architecture, the Canterbury-based designers looked at the various types and styles of vernacular in the immediate context of the site, which is surrounded by an eclectic mix of detached and semi-detached residential properties.
With a clearly defined and distinctive architectural style in the area, with most properties having a traditional form and pitched roof and many possessing features from the Arts and Crafts movement, there was a need to bring forward a sensitively designed scheme.
The approved scheme will contain a mixture of 2-bed and 1-bed dwellings and each ground floor apartment will have access to a private garden with all apartments having access to a large communal green space to the rear of the site.
With the site fronting onto School Road, DHA’s transport team engaged closely with KCC Highways and secured agreement for an ‘in and out’ driveway. DHA’s planning team worked closely with planning officers to address car parking number concerns in order to secure approval.
