Blog: Porchlight in the spotlight
DHA's David Bedford reflects on the brilliant work carried out by Porchlight, a homeless charity based in Kent, and DHA's efforts in supporting this great cause.
Having worked for DHA for more than four years, one of the genuinely nice aspects of the company is its commitment to raising money for a range of local charities, many of which are chosen by the staff.
This year’s chosen charity is Kent-based Porchlight, whose mission is to help vulnerable people who are homeless and support those at risk of becoming so.
I must confess that prior to this year I had not heard of Porchlight. However, having listened to a recent presentation by the staff some startling statistics opened my eyes. As a father of two young girls, I was particularly shocked to hear that Kent has one of the highest and growing percentages of young female homelessness in the country.
Working across Kent and the south east, Porchlight helps vulnerable and isolated people get support with their mental health, housing, education and employment. It provides children, young people and adults with the advice, guidance and skills to live independently in the future, play an active role in their local community and fulfil their potential.
In order to do our bit, each of the respective teams at DHA has taken responsibility to organise at least one fundraising event. So far this year we have had multiple dress down days, we have witnessed an extremely entertaining (and quite frankly scary) pancake eating competition in the office, and an Easter raffle is in the pipeline.
For our event, myself, Patrick Reedman, Matthew Porter and honorary team member Warren Jackson have been in training to compete in the Paddock Wood Half Marathon on Sunday 7th April.
For those who are seasoned runners, a half marathon is perhaps not a major challenge. However, a daunting week lies ahead, and many hours have been spent pounding the pavements through the winter months in preparation.
With all this in mind, if you are reading this posting we would simply ask that you take five minutes more to check out the good work of Porchlight and to raise awareness of the growing homelessness issue in Kent https://www.porchlight.org.uk/.
In addition, if there are any clients, colleagues or friends out there who feel equally passionate and would be willing to help, whether it be via donation of a raffle prize or sponsorship for our run (please visit our fundraising page), the support would be extremely gratefully received.
Thanks for reading and wish us luck,
