£14m leisure centre under starter's orders
Residents in Bulmershe, near Wokingham, will be able to enjoy a new £14 million leisure centre after DHA secured planning permission to replace the existing one which has been closed since April.
The new Bulmershe Leisure Centre will feature a six-lane 25m swimming pool and teaching pool, a four-court sports hall, a bigger gym and exercise studios, wet and dry changing facilities, alongside a reception area, café and staff offices. Importantly it will also provide dedicated pupil changing areas during school hours. The site will also be landscaped and new car parking provided.
Working closely with Faithful+Gould, the DHA team provided planning and transport advice.
The project was under considerable time constraints to deliver the permission for the new leisure centre as demolition was due to start imminently. As part of this a separate prior approval for the demolition of the existing facility was secured by DHA.
The Council is seeking to ensure that the new facility opens to residents before construction begins on the town’s Carnival scheme, a new leisure, culture and community hub in Wokingham town centre, for which DHA also secured permission.
When the Bulmershe centre opens in 2020, it will help Wokingham Borough Council support the Government’s aspirations to increase participation in sport.
