The client wanted to replace two existing staff accommodation blocks at Springwood Close, a short walk from Maidstone Hospital, with improved and purpose built modern living quaters to accommodate a larger number of doctors and nurses.
Guy Hollaway Architects were appointed to design two buildings comprising a total of 160 ensuite studio bedrooms, with communal kitchens and living rooms.
They replace outdated existing accommodation and significantly increased the capacity, whilst also providing residents with access to bicycle storage and outdoor open spaces.
The design also included sustainable elements such as photovoltaic panels and electric vehicle charging points, exceeding those mandated by local planning policy.
Following a number of pre-application advice meetings with Maidstone Borough Council and a public exhibition at the local library, an application was submitted and approved within 10 weeks.
