Bellway Homes has been granted permission to develop 220 new homes, of which 35% will be affordable, as well as retail floorspace and play areas. DHA advised the client on planning and transport matters.
The site in Hailsham, which already had outline planning permission from Wealden District Council, had significant ecological and drainage challenges. Despite not objecting to the scheme’s design, the members rejected the Reserved Matters application on the sole issue of foul drainage capacity, against officer’s advice.
With a second application already running, the council sought legal advice, and were advised that the reason for refusal couldn’t be defended at appeal, and the application was subsequently approved at planning committee.
