DHA worked closely with Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust to bring the proposals for a new orthopaedic operations hub to fruition.

The £30m development will be a standalone unit in the grounds of Maidstone Hospital and provide a dedicated facility for a range of relatively straightforward operations, such as hand, arm, hip, knee and ankle surgery.

The proposed Barn Theatre, which will create around 180 clinical and non-clinical jobs, has been specifically designed to function independently to the rest of the hospital. It will significantly increase the amount of orthopaedic operations which can take place. For example, the proposed facility will be able to cater for up to twenty hip replacements a day, compared to the  five replacements which can currently be carried out.

The building will contain four interconnected operating theatres – separated by air curtains for sanitation control – allowing multiple surgeons to be operating at one time on different patients. The layout also has the benefit of allowing surgeons in training to be easily and effectively supervised by senior practitioners.

For speed of construction and to reduce the impact of site works on the existing hospital, the facility will be a flat roofed modular building. It will be fitted with solar panels and air source heat pumps and achieve a BREEAM Excellent standard.

DHA also provided transport advice for this project and negotiated with Kent County Council to secure no objection from KCC Highways and Transportation.
