The proposed car park will serve the whole village and is intended to help reduce the schools’ existing parking problems with vehicles currently spilling on to Vicarage Lane during peak travel periods, i.e. the school run. The influx of vehicle numbers during these periods caused a high level of congestion along Vicarage Lane. The need for additional parking goes beyond the school with parking issues exacerbated during community events such as the annual Village fete, which utilises the recreation ground.
DHA Urban Design together with DHA Transport designed a 72 No. bay car park (including 5 disabled bays) arranged around a one way system. DHA Transport carried out vehicle tracking analysis to test accessibility and visibility. Suitable surface materials were explored in addition to perimeter landscaping in order to minimise the level of hard standing and the impression of built form given the rural location.
Permission was granted by Maidstone Borough Council in December 2012. Once constructed, the car park is intended to improve the parking situation for the wider community.
