Tesla suffered from physical capacity problems at their existing Storrington facility and needed space close by to increase production. They selected a greenfield site opposite their existing factory, outside the limits to built development. The project would safeguard 280 jobs which would otherwise have had to relocate out of the area.
DHA demonstrated that there were no other suitable sites nearby and that there was an urgent need for the new facility. In the face of a strong objection from the Council’s landscape officer, DHA demonstrated that every effort had been made to minimise the visual impact of the facility.
The scheme was approved unanimously by Horsham District Council’s Planning Committee, subject to a S106 agreement making a contribution to sustainable transport measures.
