Domestic Scale Anaerobic Digestion

DHA have secured a resolution to grant planning permission for a large ‘PPS7’ house within a working apple orchard in Kent. Planning Policy Statement 7 noted that very occasionally the exceptional quality and innovative nature of the design of an isolated new house may provide a justification for granting planning permission. The NPPF (National Planning Policy Framework) para 55 now continues this policy.

Key facts
  • PPS7 house
  • Dwelling to reach Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes
  • Anaerobic digestion system will provide electricity for use in the house

DHA worked with a nationally renowned architect on the scheme and the dwelling is expected to reach Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 when built. This will be achieved in part by using an anaerobic digestion system housed within the property which will process waste fruit from the applicant’s orchards to provide electricity for use within the house.

This is believed to be one of the first examples of anaerobic digestion being used in a domestic setting and the scheme will advance the use of smaller scale digestion projects and will be monitored by DEFRA following its installation.
